Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, “Come at once and recline at table”…Does he (the master) thank the servant because he did what was commanded?…
Luke 17:7-10
Christians, this is teaching that we need for today’s world! In our world today, praise for and thanks to those who work for another is expected, sometimes regardless of the quality of the work completed. The world today is dominated by “me” people. All things are to be centered around the individual. There are no differences between the worker and his master (supervisor). Some work today is considered too menial for some people to do. Such people can find an advocate for them to be lazy and not “earn” their living as most people used to do. In Jesus’ day, it was customary for some people to work for others doing whatever was given to them to do. Jesus is saying that, if one has a servant and has commanded that servant to plow or watch the sheep, then the servant will do that and complete his other duties after plowing or keeping sheep. The servant who did as his master commanded was considered a good servant but did not receive commendations from his master because the servant was doing only what his master had commanded him to do. By application for the Christian, we are commanded, in Scripture to do certain things for our Lord, Jesus. Because we are sinful by our nature, we are unworthy even to be called Christian or to perform things our Lord has commanded. Therefore, when we begin to think of ourselves as someone special, deserving recognition, we expect a “pat on the back” and a “thank you” for a job well done. Are we not all unworthy servants of our great Creator? He has the ability to snuff us out like a candle! Yet, God is a great God of grace and mercy. He knows all our weaknesses and He still loves each one of us and grants us all eternal life in His glorious Kingdom. When one thinks more of himself, that one is arrogantly telling his Creator that he is special and should be treated special. No! Today is the time for us to obey God, worship God, praise God, thank God for all He has done for and given to us. There is coming a day when each Christian will be given a robe and a crown. But, brothers and sisters, we will cast our crowns at Jesus’ feet, in humility, honoring Him for what He had done for us! It is our duty to do as our Lord commands, not expecting any accolades in the process. Consider all that Jesus did to save your soul and to make you a part of the Bride of Christ, the church. Then, give thanks and praise to Whom it is due!
