Increase Faith

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

Luke 17:5-6

This short teaching by Jesus contains a lot to learn for the disciple. The Disciples had seen Jesus doing many miracles, healing sick people, giving sight to the blind, recovering the use of damaged limbs, casting out demons, controlling nature and, even, raising dead people back to life. There was nothing Jesus could not do! Thinking that they needed their faith increased to do those same things, they asked Him to increase their faith. So, Jesus points out to them how a tiny amount of faith can do great things. Comparing one’s faith to the size of a mustard seed, the smallest known seed of the day, Jesus said that faith that small can move trees here and, mountains in Matthew 17. Jesus taught that faith is a learned ability. As one reads the Holy Scriptures, faith in the truths of the Scriptures helps the Christian to exercise faith in what God promises. Through our obedience to Christ, we learn to put greater faith in Him and, the greater one’s faith, the greater “the mountain” that can be moved. “Mountains” and “trees” are obstacles Christians encounter and they are moved, by God, as we exercise our God-given faith. Christian, how are you doing in your faith? Only a mustard seed-sized faith is needed to accomplish things that one could never believe it could be done! Pray earnestly and, in faith, expect great things from our Savior and Lord, Jesus!
