The Rich Fool

And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” But God said to him, Fool! This night your soul is required of you…

Luke 12:13-21

Our verses today are words spoken by a man who believes he has accomplished all he has by his own efforts. God calls this man a “fool.” In this parable, Jesus tells of a rich man whose land and livestock had richly produced for him. He had more produce and livestock than his current buildings could contain. So, in his arrogance, the man, saying to himself, says that he will destroy his current “barns” and build new, bigger “barns.” Jesus emphasizes the man’s arrogance by using the word “I” throughout the parable. This tells us the man had no regard for the Creator who has brought this man his bounty. The man believes it all came by his work that caused his “bumper crops and animals.” Herein is truth. No man is his own. All any man has, life, health, work, family, etc. is under the reign of God Almighty. God, as the Creator of and the Ruler of His creation determines the lot of all humanity! There is not a single maverick molecule in God’s creation, meaning all creation is under God’s control. It is each human’s responsibility to give obedience, honor and, glory to his Creator. Whether humans believe God exists or not, God is the Giver of life and the ruler of His creation. God is good toward His creation, including humans. He sends sunshine and rain upon all humanity and He gives increase to His creation as He determines. Humanity has God’s moral law written upon their hearts and a conscience helps to control sinful activity. But, God has set a high standard for humanity to meet to enter His Kingdom, Heaven. Humans must be sinless in their being to be accepted in God’s presence. Adam and Eve ruined that standard for all humans born after them because, when they sinned against God’s law, all humanity was born with a sinful nature, unable to meet God’s standard by works. So, God made the only way for humanity to come to Him through His Only Begotten Son, Jesus. It is amazing that God would even do that! He could have destroyed His creation the instant Adam and Eve sinned. But, God loved His creation and His creatures enough to make a way of redemption for humanity. What a great God we serve! If you, oh reader, do not know the Creator of all things, He is not far away. Just call upon His name and He will answer; seek His face and you will find Him, accept His way of salvation, Jesus Christ, and He will receive you in His Heaven! God bless all His children!
