Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers…
Acts 15:22-35
The Council of church Apostles, elders and, leaders decided to write a letter to the churches who had questioned the false teachings brought to them from Jerusalem. To add strength to their letter, the church selected some brothers, among them, one named Silas who we will see later with Paul on another missionary journey. The letter addressed the saints in Antioch, Syria and, Cilicia. The letter admitted that those who went out from the Jerusalem church and “troubled” the Gentile believers there were members of the Jerusalem church. The Jerusalem church also wrote that the church did not sanction these false teachers nor their teachings. Judas and Silas, from the Jerusalem church, spoke to the congregations, repeating the same things the letter said. The letter also stated that believers meet certain requirements in their Christian life. Paul will have more to write on these requirements in his epistles. After spending time with the brethren, Judas and Silas, having encouraged and edified them departed to return to Jerusalem. Paul and Barnabas remained at Antioch preaching and teaching until the Holy Spirit leads them to take another mission trip. False teachers abound in the church today. Unfortunately, even theologians have fallen for Satan’s lies and deceptions as he seeks to destroy the church of Christ. Only diligent study of the Holy Bible and sound theology with the help of the Holy Spirit can Christians remain faithful to our Savior and Lord Jesus.
