Deacons

Now in these days…a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution…

Acts 6:1-7

As the early church, in Jerusalem, grew, so did problems with certain members of the congregation. In this incident given here, in Acts 6, we see a problem arise, a solution proposed by the Apostles and, the beginnings of servanthood positions designated for the help and edification of the congregation. From this event, we have developed the church position some call “deacon” and others name them “elders.” These men were appointed by the members of the congregation to perform the duty of seeing that all the widows in the congregation received the same considerations and treatments given by the church. An interesting side note of Luke’s writing here is his writing of “the twelve.” Earlier, the eleven had decided that they should draw lots for someone to replace Judas Iscariot. The lot fell to Matthias but, he is never mentioned again in Scripture. Paul is yet to come on the scene. Seven “deacons” were chosen, among them was Stephen, whom we will deal with in a future devotional. Luke tells us these men were set before the Apostles, in the church, and the Apostles laid their hands on them and prayed for the seven men. Even today, many churches have a special service to dedicate deacons to their service for the Lord. The men selected by the congregation represented a cross section of the congregation. As the churches grew in number in the ancient world, the role of “deacon” became an important leadership position alongside the minister to serve the church in many ways. Today, deacons and elders serve the local church, even teaching and preaching when they are qualified to do so. Pastors need men to help him in church ministry. It is good that our Savior and Lord Jesus gave His Bride, the church, those who dedicate their lives to the service of our Lord.
