Jesus’ Last Meal

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover…They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

Luke 22:7-38

This day, Thursday, the 5th day, of Jesus’ last week of His earthly ministry is the day Jesus sends Peter and John to prepare the room and the meal for the Passover Feast Jesus would celebrate with His Disciples. Jesus gives detailed instructions to Peter and John as to where to find the room, what to say to the owner of the property and, to prepare the Passover meal before Jesus and the other Disciples arrive. Peter and John “found things just as Jesus had told them.” As the meal progresses, Jesus begins His last discourse with His Disciples saying that He “eagerly desired” this meal with them before He was to suffer. Jesus, then, promises them that He will not eat this meal again until the Passover “finds fulfillment in the Kingdom of God.” Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper, or Communion, as a sacrament of remembrance of Jesus’ Crucifixion and Death as a propitiation for the sins of His believers. Along with the sacrament of Baptism, the Lord’s Supper is regularly observed by the Bride of Christ. After telling the Disciples of His betrayer, the Disciples, at first, act as if each one was going to be the betrayer. But soon, an argument arises among them, once again, as to who is the greatest among them. After Jesus corrects their thinking about servanthood, He tells the Disciples that they will eat, drink and, sit on thrones, with Jesus, judging the 12 tribes of Israel. Near the end of this episode, in Luke, Jesus tells Peter of Peter’s denial of Him before the sun rises next. Even in His last hours, Jesus must deal with His Disciples pettiness, their bickering among themselves, their pride and their lack of understanding of the significance of the moment. Christians today are no different! Jesus lived the righteous life we could not! He paid the price for our sin we could never pay! And, all according to God the Father’s plan from before the foundation of the creation was ever laid! Christians, may we celebrate Easter for all that God the Father planned, our Savior did, and God the Holy Spirit applies to our souls. Jesus is going to die within 24 hours! But oh, what glory there will be on the third day!!
