The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good.
Psalm 14
On this April Fool’s day, let Christians remember that there are people in this world who think, act and, say, “There is no god.” This psalm of David goes on to tell us that, as “the children of man,” all humans, have become “corrupt,” “there is none who does good” and, just in case someone thinks himself to be “good,” David adds “not even one!” David ends his psalm writing of a righteous generation (righteous by God’s grace alone), God being a refuge of the poor and, desiring that salvation come from God’s Holy mount, Zion. The first verse in Hebrew, when literally interpreted says, “No, God!” It is the fool who says to God, “No!” and chooses to not believe God exists. Until the 17th century, there were no people who did not believe a god existed, whether the God of the Holy Scriptures or some idol. Since that time, some have tried to prove the God of the Bible does not exist. It is these people, today, and those people, in David’s time, who are saying to their Creator, “No!” There is a story of an atheist who sued the government to have a holiday created for atheists because most holidays were for people who believed in God. The judge hearing the case ruled that the atheist’s case was already decided and that April 1st was that day. The atheist asked for further explanations. The judge said Psalm 14 in the Bible has already declared the holiday by saying, “the fool has said…” Needless to say, the atheist was not happy with the judge’s decision. Christians know differently that there is an Almighty, Omnipotent, Omniscient God who created all things and reigns over His creation so that not one thing, animate or inanimate, does not fall under His rule and His reign. Those who reject Him and His only way to salvation, Jesus Christ, are living under God’s judgment every second they continue to live in the world. Christians are commanded to tell everyone about the good news of God’s Gospel. Christian, how are you doing in obedience to God’s command?
