…He [Jesus] proceeded to tell a parable…A nobleman went into a far country…Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas…
Luke 19:11-27
Jesus tells this very familiar parable of the servants who receive minas (money) from their master while their master goes away to receive a kingdom for himself. A similar parable is given in Matthew 25. Jesus tells this parable, according to Scripture, that He, along with the crowd from Jericho, was close to Jerusalem and He, knowing the hearts of all people, knew the crowd was thinking that the Kingdom of God was imminent. In this parable, Jesus tells us that the master, going to receive a kingdom, gave his servants some money (minas) to do business with while he was gone. Jesus says that the man, going to receive a kingdom, was hated by the people of that kingdom. But, we learn in verse 15, that the he did receive his kingdom and returned to his servants to be given an account of the business they had done with his money. Two of the servants reported a profitable return of the master’s money given to them and they were given more responsibility in the master’s kingdom by having authority over a number of cities in his kingdom. But, one servant had hidden his master’s money and returned it to him saying that he was afraid because he knew his master to be a “severe Man.” Angered by his servant’s action, the master rebuked him saying that, knowing what the servant knew of his master, the least the servant should have done was to deposit his money to earn interest while the master was gone. In his condemnation, the master took the money from the servant and gave it to the servant who had gained the most profit for his master. This unworthy servant had what had been given to him, now taken away and, he was “cast into outer darkness” (Matthew 25). Christians, at our regeneration, we were given talent(s) with which to use for our Savior and Lord to “invest” for the Kingdom of Heaven in Jesus’ name. This parable is about God’s chosen ones who make up the “Bride of Christ.” But, in this earthly existence, there those who only claim Christianity and are not truly saved. Christians are to use the talent(s) given through the Holy Spirit to increase the Kingdom of Heaven! How are you doing with your “talent(s)?”
