Overcoming the World

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

1 John 5:1-5

The book of Revelation is one of the most studied and controversial Biblical books. Many people spend years looking at its details in order to understand its seemingly perplexing message. Christians of all kinds have tried to put forth all sorts of positions on things such as the dating of the book and the nature of Christ’s millennial reign. Regardless of one’s position, it is clear that Revelation was written in order to encourage Christians to overcome the world. The letters to the seven churches repeatedly promise rewards to “the one who conquers (overcomes).” Jesus’ majesty throughout the book encourages all Christians to continue in faithfulness. Overcoming the world is a very important theme in 1 John. John writes that “everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world.” And, the one who overcomes the world is the one who believes Jesus is the Son of God. John concludes this part of his letter, giving tests of assurance through his confession of the identity of Jesus given us in verse 1. This confession involves believing Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God. Believing the divine Son of God became incarnate is the only confession that can enable us to have victory over the forces of evil and, the God-man, Jesus Christ, is worthy of our ultimate allegiance. His intercession for each Christian guarantees His victory over sin and it will become real in our own lives. Our verses today remind us that our assurance means we are inseparable from our Savior and Lord Jesus. Our confession of the God-man Christ Jesus leads to true love of God. And, we overcome the world by our faith in God incarnate whose work makes us children of the Father. Do you believe Jesus is the divine Word of God who became incarnate for the sake of our salvation? Do you believe He is truly God and truly man? If so, these verses promise you will overcome the world. Are you overcoming the world today? Do you find yourself walking in victory over sin and evil? If not, confess your faith in the Lord, draw near to Him and, He will draw near to you.
