But He [Jesus] said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David’s son?… Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts…
Luke 20:41-47
After Jesus Authoritatively answers the questions of the Sadducees, He asks them and, the scribes with them, “How can they say that the Christ is David’s son?” Jesus quotes Psalm 110 saying, “David thus calls Him Lord, so how is He his son?” Scripture does not give the response by the religious leaders who were confronted with this question. We do know that, in Jesus’ day, the Sadducees were a sect of Judaism followed by many people and the scribes were the “lawyers” of the Scriptures. Between these two groups the entire Scripture could be quoted by heart. It is no stretch of one’s imagination to think the “experts” of God’s Holy Word would know the Psalm being quoted and they had given their interpretation many times to the people. The Creator of all humanity and the Word of God challenged their thinking to dare to say Jesus of Nazareth was David’s Son soon to sit at the right Hand of Authority over all Creation. Without further conversation, Jesus turns to the crowd saying to them “Beware of the scribes, who like walking in “holy robes,” loving the public’s adoration and, enjoy the best seats in the synagogues and at feasts.” Then, Jesus tells the real truth about these evil men, “who devour widow’s houses and for a pretense make long prayers.” Jesus, then, pronounces woe upon these supposed teachers who will receive a greater condemnation. Christians, James, Jesus’ brother, wrote, in James 3:1, that not many should be teachers because they are held to a higher standard because they influence many as they teach the gospel and Christianity. Just as the religious leaders of Jesus’ day were condemned for their apostasy, so are those who preach and teach heretically today. Christians must read and know the Holy Scriptures in order to perceive misrepresentation of the Holy Scriptures by those who think they know more than the common people. One can be educated wrongly! We see that in our secular society today and, if that is true, it is certain that God’s Scriptures are being distorted by non-Christian theologians today. There is an apostasy happening in the world that will become greater in influence before the return of our Savior and Lord Jesus. Let true Christians not be duped by false teachers and preachers!
