…let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
Hebrews 10:19-39
Here, the author of the Hebrews tells his audience how they should live in light of the superiority of Christ. This knowledge should produce certain results in faith and life. The audience’s yearning for the old covenant ways did not allow them direct access to God’s presence, showing their significant doubts as to whether they had the right to approach God at all. But, the doubts were unfounded. Christ’s high priesthood enables His people to come to the throne of grace with confidence, “since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near …” All that are His must draw near. We must run to Him in our times of doubt and need and in all seasons of our lives. Each one of us must draw near to Jesus and let nothing keep us from Him. Our assurance is not based on how we feel on any particular day because, our assurance is based on our knowledge and confidence in His superiority. Full assurance is only possible as we take our eyes off ourselves and look to Christ as revealed to us in His Word. Full assurance is only possible as we look at His unchanging character. As we draw near with assurance, we also draw near with clean hearts free from evil consciences. Trusting in Christ, we have such hearts today no matter how weak this trust may seem to us. Are you afraid to draw near to Christ? If you are, do not be afraid to draw near in times of doubt or sin because Christ has opened up the way into the presence of God. Come boldly before His throne today, not because He owes you, but because His work of sacrifice and intercession truly and graciously enables His people to enter in.
