After we were brought safely through, we then learned that the island was called Malta.
Acts 28: 1-10
The island where the ship wrecked was called Malta. The survivors learned the name of the island after the natives showed unusual kindness to the survivors. Paul decided to be helpful by collecting some wood to put on the fire the natives had lit to warm the cold, wet survivors. As Paul was putting wood on the fire, a snake, viper, bit Paul’s hand and remained stuck on his hand. When the islanders saw the snake on Paul’s hand, they expressed their superstition that such an incident as Paul’s was an indication that he was a murderer and, since he was saved from the shipwreck, he was now being punished by the snake bite. They were just waiting for Paul to drop dead. But, God was not through with the Apostle Paul and Paul shook the snake off his hand and into the fire. When Paul did not die of the snake bite, the natives decided Paul must be some god. Luke turns to another subject, that of a Roman who owned much land on the island, Publius. Now, Publius’ father was ill. So, visited with him, prayed for him and, then, laid his hands on Publius’ father, healing the man. This news spread quickly among the islanders and, they brought as many sick and afflicted people as they could to Paul and God healed them all through Paul. Paul’s actions caused the people to greatly honor Paul and his travelers and, when they were about to sail, the people brought to them many needful things to take with them on their journey. Paul’s life of total commitment to our Savior and Lord shows us that God will take care of His children, meeting all their needs and giving generously to help them in their work for the Lord. Though Paul is still a prisoner bound for Caesar’s court, he is blessed by God and, in turn, is a blessing to others. Christians, today, have these biblical examples to follow and to be examples to others who are growing in their faith and sanctification. Source: S C Ball August 18, 2023
