So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.
Acts 17:22-34
Paul, having been provoked in his spirit by the many idols he saw in Athens, goes to the Aeropagus, at the invitation of some Stoics and Epicureans in the agora of Athens, to speak to the philosophers there who gather there to discuss the latest topic of the day. Paul begins his speech by referring to all the idols he has seen around the city, including an idol erected to the unknown god. Although this idol was erected just to cover any god that may have been overlooked by these “philosophers,” Paul used it to introduce the God of Creation to these pagan people. Paul masterfully, concisely tells them of the God, whom they do not know, who is the God of everything and everyone. Paul tells them God is the One in whom all humanity lives, moves and, has its being. Paul even referenced the Athenians’ own poets writing about this God. Paul then told them that God was not One who could be represented by sculptures and statues and until now, God had “overlooked” the pagans’ sins. But, now God has sent a Man, His Son, to tell people everywhere to repent and God has set a day when this Man will judge the world in righteousness. Paul said God has assured the world that this is His Man by raising Him from the dead. Upon hearing this, some “mocked” Paul and put him off saying, “We will hear you again about this.” After Paul departed the Aeropagus, some “joined” Paul, including men and women. The reaction of the majority of the “philosophers” to Paul is the same as a preacher of the Holy God today experiences. The command to the Christian is go, tell… God never expects an ambassador of His Kingdom to “convert” anyone. Conversion is a work of God alone. So, when Christians present the gospel, we must present it lovingly, sincerely and, pleadingly. When that is done, God will do His work that He chooses to do through the works of His chosen people. Christians, we are messengers bringing the good news of the Gospel to this dying world.
