My Strength & My Shield

To you, O Lord, I call; my rock, be not deaf to me…Oh, save your people and bless your heritage! Be their shepherd and carry them forever.

Psalm 28

As we continue to look at some of David’s psalms, this one opens with David pleading for the Lord to hear him because he does not want to become like those “who go down to the pit (hell).” As David lifts his hands and voice “toward Your most holy sanctuary,” David pleads that he not be given the “due reward” of the wicked who “do not regard the works of the Lord.” Though David is a servant of the Lord, saved for eternity, he recognizes the awesome power of the God of all Creation and God’s just, righteous judgment of all His creatures. David knows there are people who do not obey the Lord because they have chosen to replace God, and the works of His hands, with gods they have made up and created idols to which they bow the knee. David knows the destiny of such people and he pleads with God to not “count” David among these unrighteous people headed for “the pit.” David ends this psalm with praise for God’s strength and refuge of His people. He thanks God for His salvation and for being their shepherd, carrying them forever. As Christians, we like to read God’s Word and especially enjoy the Scriptures that tell of God’s love, grace and, mercy. After all, we are saved by God through His love, grace and, mercy. But, God left us here when He saved us because He wants, yes, even commands, us to go, tell, baptize and teach all things Jesus taught His disciples. Each Christian knows someone who will “go down to the pit.” Is it possible that we are to be the light shining in this dark world to light their way to God’s salvation? I believe that is the reason we are left here until God calls us to Home or He translates us upon His return in power and glory!
