That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus…

Luke 24:13-35

The story of the disciples going to Emmaus on the day of Jesus’ resurrection is one of the most familiar passages of the New Testament. It has been preached, taught and, even, made into a movement in parts of the Christian community. There were more disciples in the upper room the day of Jesus’ resurrection than the eleven who would become Apostles. This story tells of two who decided to go to Emmaus, a village 7 miles from Jerusalem. Most people, in that day, walked everywhere they travelled. The walk there would be less than 2 hours’ walking. As they were walking and discussing the events of the day, Jesus joined them on their walk. But their eyes were kept from recognizing Jesus. It would not be unusual for someone to join others as they travelled for there would be more safety in the numbers of people travelling together. When Jesus asked them what they were discussing, Cleopas, thinking this traveler had not been in Jerusalem the last few days, said to Jesus, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” After telling Jesus that their hopes and dreams for Jesus to be Messiah had been dashed by His crucifixion, Jesus, beginning at the beginning, said to the men, “ O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into His glory?” Then, Jesus interpreted all the Scriptures of the things concerning Himself. Still unrecognized by these two travelers, Jesus sat down to eat with them. At this point their eyes were opened to see who the man really was, Jesus, the Risen Savior! Just as quickly as they recognized Jesus, Jesus disappeared from their sight, leaving them to contemplate what had just happened. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road…” O Christians, there have been precious few who have had such an experience with our Savior and Lord Jesus! Maybe you have experienced the presence of our Lord that has left a lasting impression upon your life and ministry! It still happens! I pray that all Christians may have such an experience with Jesus that we all are filled with His Love and express His Love to all we meet!
