Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening He went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, and all the people came early in the morning to hear Him at the temple.
Luke 21:37-38
This short scene by Luke shows us our Savior at work to the very end of His earthly ministry. Jesus was just days from His Passion upon a Roman cross, being a propitiation for the sins of His elect, having lived a sinless life to provide for them an imputed righteous “robe” enabling His elect to come before God in worship, praise and, supplication. This double imputation is how each Christian is justified and able to come to our most Holy God. Humans cannot pay the infinite price of even one sin, much less all the sins ever committed. Jesus’ shed blood upon the cross did that for us. No human is able to live a sinless life, the standard for righteousness in God’s sight, for we are born sinners, unable to not sin. Jesus “earned” righteousness in His sinless life during His earthly ministry. Thus, God again imputes Jesus’ righteousness to the justified Christian and the Christian can now come before God’s presence without being destroyed. Our God is an awesome God. Even the elect fall on their face in the presence of the Holy One. God’s Holy Word tells of such reactions by humans in His presence. God is not to be trifled with nor is He to be treated in a casual manner. God is good, gracious, merciful, long suffering and many other positive characteristics. But, God is also demanding of how He is to be worshipped and He is a God of vengeance, repaying those who sin against Him by sinning against His elect. His wrath is eternal! All who reject God’s Son also reject God and, unless they repent in this life, they will spend an eternity in the fires of Hell. If you do not know God’s Son, Jesus, today is the only day you have to turn to Him. Tomorrow is not promised! Turn to Jesus today!
