Unforgivable Sin

And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

Luke 12:10

Blasphemy is a sin that can only be done with words. It’s a sin that is committed with one’s mouth or with one’s pen. It is a verbal/written sin. It has to do with saying something against the Holy Spirit. During Jesus’ earthly ministry, the religious leaders, the scribes, the Pharisees, and the Sadducees, were constantly hostile toward Him, stirring up a conspiracy to kill Him. They were constantly attacking Jesus and charging Him with this and that. In Monday’s devotional, Jesus was accused of casting out Satan by the power of Satan. In Jesus’ response, it’s almost as if He said, “Hold it right there, guys. I’ve been patient with you, I’ve been tolerant with you, I’ve been long-suffering, but you are coming perilously close now to making an accusation against me that’s going to wipe you out now and forever.” He said that any sin against the Son of Man, Jesus during His earthly ministry, can be forgiven, but if you blaspheme against the Holy Spirit (ascribing the work of the Holy Spirit to Satan, or, even, to equate them), such sin is unforgivable. After the Resurrection, the Holy Spirit raised Jesus up and declared Him to be the Christ with Power. In the book of Hebrews, the distinction between blaspheming Christ and blaspheming the Holy Spirit becomes the same. It is possible for a human to die without believing unto salvation and, some think that to be the “unforgivable sin.” It is, also, true that to die in unbelief is to be consigned to hell because there is no salvation after death, only judgment. But, one can be saved on his/her deathbed. The one who commits blasphemy seals his/her condemnation and judgment the moment blasphemy is made. For those who have committed “the sin unto death,” blasphemy, the Bible says that Christians are not required to pray for them. We are to pray for people who are committing any other sin, but, if we see a person committing blasphemy, the sin unto death, we are allowed but, not required, to pray for them. God is great in His Grace, Mercy and, Love. He is, also, great in His wrath. May God’s Grace, Mercy and, Love secure your eternal position, helping you to tell others the good news of salvation to all who will receive Jesus.
