In that same hour, He [Jesus] rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children…for such was Your gracious will…Then, turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For, I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”
Luke 10:21-24
Jesus has just been told by the 72 disciples, that He had sent on missionary journeys, of the great successes, and rejections, they had experienced in their work. Jesus, then, prays to God the Father with rejoicing and thanksgiving for their work and its success. Jesus credits God for giving understanding to these ones, like children, rather than to the worldly wise of the day for it was God the Father’s will to do so. Then, Jesus turns toward His Disciples and blesses them for all that they have seen Jesus do in His earthly ministry. Jesus tells these humble men that there are those of higher stations in life who have wanted to see and hear the things they have seen and heard from Jesus and, are now doing in Jesus’ name. Our lesson here is that humbleness marks the Christian life and, though a higher station of life, in education or financial success or political success, may be good goals to achieve, they, also, have temptations to become more worldly and less Godly. Let all Christians be , first, lovers of our Savior and Lord Jesus, seeking His Kingdom and, understanding that, other things will be granted to those seekers. May our God bless you on your life’s journey!
